Are we still of any use? - the final witness of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Alfred Delp SJ.

Speaker: Ben Bano
Discussant: Rt Hon Sir John Battle KC*SC

It's not easy to be an activist for justice and peacethese days when our efforts to draw attention to injustices such as the Illegal Migration Billseem to have little or no effect. In this session, Ben Bano, who has beenadvocating for the rights of migrants for 25 years, will reflect on the last writings of two remarkable men - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and the Jesuit Alfred Delp who were incarceratedat the same time in Berlin's Tegel Prison in 1944 and 1945 before they were executed. Delp's last writings were smuggled out on scraps of paper after he wrote with his hands which were manacled. Both men were concerned with what they saw as a  present and future world markedby indifference and denial of suffering.Ben will discuss how their valuable insights can provide inspiration and counter a potential'culture of despair' for those of us involved in the struggle forjustice and peace in a hostile environment.

Dialogue or Confession? Ecumenical Responsibility and the War in Ukraine

Speaker: Revd dr keith clements
Discussant: Dr STephen plant

While the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been overwhelmingly condemned by the churches of the world, the support of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) for the war poses difficult questions to the ecumenical community: in particular whether the church's support for the war and the extreme nationalist policies of President Putin constitue grounds = as Rowan Williams for example has argued - for suspending it from the World Council of Churches (WCC) and other ecumenical bodies. The current ecumenical emphasis upon 'dialogue' acts as a deterrent to such action, but the WCC describes itself as a fellowship of churches that 'confess Christ as God and saviour' and therefore supreme over all other authorities. By it's explicit and total support for this aggressive war, disregarding all international codes and obligations, the leadership of the ROC has in this instance evidently denied the supremacy of Christ and the supreme authority. There are parallels with previous episodes in ecumenical history, most particularly 1930s Germany and the challenge to the ecumenical movement, posed by the confessing church, to refuse recognition of the Reich Church. As part of the ecumenical family, while dialogue has it's own importance, the prime ecumenical commitment in situations of conflict and oppression is to confess Christ, whatever the risks of furthering division in the ecumenical family that this incurs.

'Religionless christianity and unconscious christianity'

Speaker: Dr Eleanor mclaughlin
discussant: Rt Hon and Rt Revd Lord Williams of Oystermouth

In this seminar Dr Eleanor McLaughlin will introduce Bonhoeffers prison writing, focusing in particular on two concepts that appear during this period: religionless Christianity and unconscious Christianity. We will investigate what Bonhoeffer meant when he wrote about these two forms of Christian expression, and consider the similarities and differences between the two. We will end by asking what practical implications these two concepts might have for us today.
